LYNNIA SHANLEY

Destinations

11/18/2016

Driving down a long dark road...a freeway
free of distraction. Center lane. Six lanes wide.
me
the gravel
and speed

A song deep with beats and stories to tell
I smirk at the mystery ahead.
This is taking me somewhere.
A journey..

I sneak a look to the past and there they are
coming for me like a pack of wolves in the woods.
Their eyes glaring fiercely, blinding me with fear.
I accelerate and wonder how they got so close so fast.
Gravity seems to hold me back as the sides close in
Their eyes flash in sync to the beat
ins and outs
swerving and dodging each other just to make sense of the song.
They look like speed skaters on ice, gracefully catching the rhythm.
The bass in the song gets faster as they wiz by me
Each side I don't know where to look.
It pans out to a sea of them each with a mission to catch bait.
Their eyes turn to fire and seem to work against the cadence making for a turn of plot.

Do I follow?
Do I withdraw?
Do I focus on the oncoming rupture
looking to clean
to want
to wake up?

I glide - going unnoticed

My eyes scope the options while my fingers remain in the
<<tap tap tap>> to the <<beat beat beat>>
Going places

Was it all a dream?
I look down to realize a clue resides.
When I return to reality I froze and lay before me
a destination
of choice

.....
Do you ever get lost in the soundtrack that perfectly plays along to your life?
This song, Destinations by Alesso, a song I had never heard before, a song that spontaneously found its way to my ears. The song enhanced this journey as I drove down the 15 after midnight. Some distant cars ahead, me alone, and a pack of cars in my rear view mirror. Somehow, I always find myself in the middle, in the open. Safer. Unknown the song and of course at the time, the title. I said to myself "this song sounds like  a journey." I look down at my playlist and I see "Destination."
I let the song take me somewhere in my mind. Such a simple experience yet music has the ability to make the mundane memorable. A song I wouldn't normally attract but now this moment stands as a metaphor for my life and I thank music for that; it did its job once again.
